Acupuncture is increasingly gaining recognition within Western healthcare systems as more and more clinical trials are proving its effectiveness. It is officially recognised by the NHS, which describes it as a non-invasive form of treatment with no side-effects. It is routinely used in many NHS Pain Clinics, birth centres and detox schemes.
Acupuncture for musculo-skeletal conditions
From tight shoulders to back pain, from sciatica to frozen shoulder, acupuncture is rightly famous for providing effective and lasting relief from musculo-skeletal conditions. We also welcome NICE's guidelines that acupuncture is now a recommended treatment for chronic lower back pain. Acupuncture is particularly effective at treating various types of arthritis, including osteo-arthritis of the knee.
Acupuncture for stress-related conditions
Many people experience deep relaxation during an acupuncture treatment, and this can used to effectively combat stress-related conditions. The treatments can be tailored to suit the exact make-up of the patient and address exactly how stress is affecting them - be it improving sleep, soothing the digestion, or regulating breathing function.
Acupunture for fertility and during pregnancy
Acupuncture has been used for centuries to increase fertility. Conventional fertility treatment (ovulation-inducing drugs, IVF, etc) relies on an accurate medical diagnosis and you will usually know within 1 cycle whether it was successful or not. Acupuncture works in a different way: it coaxes a woman's body into a healthier, more relaxed, and more fertile state over a period of a few weeks to a few months. It may be especially useful when the infertility is "unexplained". Acupuncture can also be used alongside conventional treatment like IVF to improve chances of a successful outcome.
During pregnancy, acupuncture can be used for most "minor" ailments which your midwife describes as not warranting medical attention, for example morning sickness and or back pain. It can also be used for birth preparation and turning breech babies (ideally around week 34).
